Effective May 30, 2022 - so called “less secure apps” will no longer be able to access your Gmail. Basically Google separated user's Google Account password and Gmail Account password. In case Gmail account is compromised Google Account will remain intact. Created App Password can be used by Mail and any other program (including CLI program as PHP, Perl etc.) to access Gmail. |

How to setup App password for Mail? Login to your Google account and select Security:  scroll down to "2-Step Verification"  click on "Get Started"  you will be asked for your Account password. Add your contact phone (Google Voice number works) and verify it VIA Text message or a Phone call. Return back to your Google account page and in "Security" tab in "Signing in to Google" click on "App passwords":  when asked - provide your Google account password and on "APp passwords" page select a program and platform for password to be generated:  Copy app password to a safe place! That's a first and last time this password displayed (spaces not required and if Copy and Paste used - not present).  We've tried to replace password in Apple Mail - for some reason it did not work. Had to delete Gmail account in Mail and add it again with a new password. If 2-step verification is not enabled in your account - it's just a matter of time for access to stop working. |
